Mammoth Update Mid-Week in October
By: Joe Carter
Even though Mammoth opened up last weekend for shredding the warm weather has taken a pretty good amount of snow from the hill. However there is some snow still up there and Matty Mo has been hard at work making sure that wether the mountain is open or closed he can still get his fix. At a spot high on the hill he made some pretty sick log jibs and more stuff for some good times in the woods. Then of course the JLA park is always amazing. So here is a little taste of what’s going on in Mammoth.

- Matty Mo not scared at all of any hangups. Frontside boardslide with plenty of chances to catch an edge

- Cornell Agee tailpress

- Matty Mo with a buttery switch nosepress

- Greg Bokenkamp high speed frontside grind

- Frank Knabb just moved out to Mammoth from New York to blast big frontside airs at the park

- Garrett blasting a method out of the bowl

- Lots of training going down

- Frank, frontside 180 melon

- Greg is not afraid of the vert

- Frank, Greg, and Garrett getting into a threeway in the cradle

Mammoth Mountain Opening Weekend 2009
Words: Joe Carter
Photos:Joe Carter
Usually this time of the year we are all just waiting to see a few flurries fall from the sky. Last week a freak storm rolled into Mammoth giving them a solid blanket of the snow on the mountain for them to open on Friday. The second earliest Mammoth Mountain has ever opened ever. Thursday night we piled in the RV from San Diego with Jack Mitrani, Nick Russell, Elliott Levitt, Tyler Flygar, and myself to get into Mammoth right in time to make it for last call at the bars. Then we headed up to a night of rest up at the Main Lodge parking lot so we could wake up nice and early for Friday for our first day of shredding this season. To make things even better on Friday Mammoth decided to celebrate the early snow mother nature put down with giving everybody that showed up free tickets. Something that I thought would never happen, especially at a big resort like Mammoth. I think that most of the people there made up for it at the bars. The conditions were some of the best I have seen for an opening day in years. With warm sunny skies and enough snow to take runs all the way from the top of the mountain. Then towards the bottom on one of the runs there were some boxes set up for some fun early season jibs. After shredding all day we ended up camping out for a great night with plenty of frosty brews and then of course for a big night at the bars. Saturday morning got off to a late start because some of us were feeling a little under the weather, but we made it to the mountain for another solid day of riding with a solid crew. So make your way up here when you get a chance for some of the most fun early season snowboarding you will ever find this early.

- Prime parking spot right in the front

- Lots of C-Lo in the back

- There was a lot of this going down

- Posted up Thursday night in the Main Lodge parking lot ready for the morning

- Beers for breakfast in the liftline with Sticky and friends

- Plenty of snow up on chair 3

- Free tickets brings quite the crowd

- Nate Farrell and Nick Russell

- Matty Mo blasting a method looking like he’s back on the east coast with this little sidecut jump

- Ashbury’s Lance and Mike Hakker

- Jack Mitrani on the sundeck

- Matty Mo front boards on one of the many new jibs Mammoth has just made

- Matty getting over some rocks with a mandatory landing or else he would be tumbling into rocks in the landing

- Same run nosebonk on the slanted box

- Great opening with plenty of snow

- We had a legit campspot. (L-R) CBass, Tyler, Ben Gavelda, Danny Davis, Pat, Nick Russell

- Jack feeding Layla some weiner

- Jack getting up some wood

- Tyler making a natural fridge

- Tyler about a hour into partying

Cody Rosenthal Update
By: Joe Carter

As many of you may or not know. A good friend to us all here at Snowrev Cody had injured his L3 Vertebrae last May at Snowboarder Magazine’s Superpark. He had to be flown by helicopter to Reno for surgery. As you can imagine things like this do not come cheap. However he is on a good road to make a full recovery. So now all of you out there that either know Cody, or have even ever seen him snowboard are not left in the dark and if there are people that would still like to help out, you still can. Check the links below for more info.

- Cody Ally-oop backside rodeo during Mammoth’s West Coast Invitational
For the people out there who don’t know, how did everything go down?
I was cruising around Superpark no big deal doing what I normally do, not trying to get crazy just having fun. I was with Ricky Tucker And Harrison Gordon and I hit the last jump and completely missed the fucking landing. Not only that but I was going way to fast to begin with which is kinda weird because I could barely clear that jump all day. Anyway I did a backside 9 straight to flat and landed on my feet. I broke my L3 vertebrae, shit hurt. Then I flew to Reno and got surgery.

- Cruising earlier at that day at Superpark

- Brokeback yoga?

- The jump
How long did you have to stay in the hospital?
I was in the hospital for about a week. I was pretty out of it, but I had my family and friends there with me. If it wasn’t for them It would have been a lot worse.

- Eric Warner Photo

- Switch Method? Nope, Ally-oop stalefish

- Right after riding all day. Boneless at JLA Park

- Backside 180
So now that you have had some time on your hands what have you been up to?
Mainly physical therapy, that’s really my focus. Thanks to Core in Encinitas for sponsoring my recovery! I also started taking classes online.

http://www.snowboard-revolution.com/news/Revolution-Sunset-Session-at-Mammoth.html
What are some of the things that you have to do for Physical Therapy?
I have a class in the pool where I do a lot of resistance stuff and some swimming. Physical Therapy in the pool is amazing because it’s less strenuous. I also go a few days a week to Core and do some basic stuff. Now that my range of motion is better I am starting to pick up a little and do some more challenging stuff. I am happy that I’m getting stronger and I’ll be back to normal one day soon.

- One of the many Methods from Cody. First week at Mammoth last fall

- Another classic one. Photo: Tyler Heffernan
When are you expected to be back snowboarding?
If there was snow right now I could make turns. I’m thinking in a few months I’ll be good. I skated around a little bit and it felt ok. The problem is I wanted to do all the tricks I used to do. My brain was battling my body the whole time. Like “Don’t even think about trying to do that trick, It’s gonna hurt and mess your back up”. I held off for the most part but I can still do a nose manual and some no complies. I am gonna take it easy though that was my little test run.

Let Loose Tour SD to SF
By: Joe Carter
Photos: Joe Carter, Cody Rosenthal, Luke Mitrani, Elliott Levitt
As we are about to get into full blown winter coming up before we know it. There was an idea floating around that it would be a good time to have one last RV trip. However this one was much different than all the others. There will be no snowboarding going down. No video premiers. Some fun skateboarding, and on the way there have very loose plans about getting up to San Francisco. Oh, and we did a bit of partying too. Hence the name, The Let Loose Tour. The trip started out in Carlsbad where we headed up North with Cody Rosenthal, Mike Casanova, Elliott Levitt and myself. Then we made a random spot in Ventura to Meet up with Harrison Gordon, where we convinced him to jump in for the party on wheels. Our first official stop for the night was in San Luis Obispo to meet up with Luke Mitrani, Josh Warnick, Matt Hooper and more for a party we were throwing with some of the kids that go to school at Cal Poly. Stocked up with a few kegs and the finest plastic bottled handles, keeping it real classy. Thanks to everyone from Cal Poly snowboard and ski club people for helping us with a good time and setting up a house for us to rage at. Great times.
The next morning started a little late but we had made our way up to San Francisco for what we were getting there for. A three day bluegrass festival taking place at Golden Gate Park with six stages and great tunes blaring throughout the whole park. Again there we would meet up with many more of the homies that cruised out from Tahoe with Danny Davis. Making our entourage of party animals a much larger herd for great times with great people. Let loose.

- Pretty much the whole drive up there were views like this. Not too shabby (P: Joe)

- Cody recovering well from his back injury last May at Superpark. (P:Luke)

- Nova and Luke posted up. (P:Cody)

- Double Documentation on this trip (P:Luke)

- Harrison jumping in for the tour

- Guzzlin

- If you have seen many of the other stories about our travels in the RV you would probably know by now this is pretty standard

- Making our stop for the night in SLO. I think Nova ran down there and tried to wrestle some of these things. (P: Cody)

- Not too pumped(P: Cody)

- Harrison Garfield

- It would probably be no big deal for this bird to peck your eyes out.

- Just hanging out

- This guy was chill. Letting me get really close

- Finally getting some skating in. Harrison locking into a backside nosegrind

- Time for a dip

- Luke is down

- Now the night begins

- Rollin Up

- Since we are at a college party it’s only appropriate to have some keg stands right off the bat

- Josh Warnick

- Getting off with some product

- Squid cutting up some rug

- Elliott starting out the first night in SF

- Teamwork shot (P: Elliot)

- Not exactly a trolley that you expect in San Fran, but the bus is cheap

- The buses in SF are really big, so if you want to drink beers, you just have to go to the back. Amazing

- Parking a big RV in a city is not always the easiest thing. So I parked it in the back of a funeral home when we were in a sketchy part of town

- Lots of awesome music

- Too damn drunk to remember who this was, but they were pretty sick

- Danny Davis having an awesome time

- Partying

- Nice gear Luke (P:Cody)

Hot Dawgz And Handrails 2009
Words: Joe Carter
Photos: Joe Carter
Now is about the time for everybody to start getting real excited, because with Hot Dawgz and Handrails kicking off the year it will be soon be snowing before you know it. With typical Southern California weather sunny skies and a cool breeze made it ideal for the riders to strap back onto their boards and see how it feels for the first time in a while. As always Bear mixed things up with two different options for many of the worlds best rail riders to pick which run they wanted to take. On the riders left side you had a tricky kink/elbow rail that many riders had trouble with, but the ones that were making it through did some sick shit. Then you come in hot to a new feature bear has made with a box on the top of a uphill pyramid. That will be a blast this winter when it’s on hill. Your other options on the other side consisted of a 6 foot drop, to a granite skate style ledge. Going into more options after that. To the left a jump into a slanted wall ride. Or if you made a right at the fork you would get into a long C-rail. Then to finish it off one more feature at the end that could be hit on either side. Leave it to Bear Mountain to make the most wild pre season rail set-up ever.
As for the riding there were a lot of standout riders that might not have made it to the top three but they killed everything. Johnnie Paxson came out firing after just having the last part in MFM Technine’s “Hard To Earn” video on every feature the Bear park staff could put in front of him. Kyle Lopiccolo rode well after not seeing snow all summer hauling ass all over the place and going for in classic Lopiccolo style. Ryan Paul is a kid from Minnesota who was at Hood all summer and it showed this weekend turing the heads of the crowd on every feature, look out for that kid. Dylan Alito was busting allver the place in his summer rail jam attire opting to not wear pants while hiking around in the heat. Then there is Tahoe’s Brandon Cocard and Johnny Lazz who made it down to show the crowd some amazing moves. Making their way out from Vermont were Forest Bailey and Yale Cousino who were some of the only ones to make it through the curved kinked rail with front boards. Ted Borland, Cam Pierce, Chris Brewster, Brandon Hammond and more came out from Utah and rode impressive. Jed Anderson will blow your mind anytime you see him on a board. Rails, pipe, jumps, doesn’t matter. The list goes on and on.
So check all the photos and see what you might have missed from this season’s kickoff event from Big Bear. Thanks to Clayton Shoemaker, Brad Farmer, The Park Staff, riders, fans that came out, and everyone that made this event another great one at Bear Mountain.

- Ben Rice turning it up a notch on the ledge, backside 270

- Riceman navigating thorugh the kink

- Forest Bailey frontboards the shit out of the turning kink rail

- Ted holding a very technical tailpress all the way through

- Bundy locking it in, then popping it out to the bank

- Yale Cousino making his way from Vermont to be another one of the standout riders of the day

-Mayor of Bear Chris Bradshaw

- Louif Paradis frontside lipslides the C

- Videograss filmer, editor, and great dude. Justin Meyer

- The chosen one. Jed Anderson

- Jed is too good. As seen here, handling a textbook front lip through the kink/elbow coming off the end perfectly square
- Jed getting inverted on the wall. Backflip wall bash

- I don’t remember if Cam Pierce made it all the way to the end on this one, but a backlip through this things is pretty bonkers

- 2009 HDHR Winner Scott Vine gives the wallride a backside rodeo

- This dude getting some fresh stickers on his new board. Good Looking out

- It would not be Hot Dawgs and Handrails without a bunch of people getting hammered drunk on the sundeck

- This guy got a little too hammered and decided he needed to be a badass and fight. Welcome to the 909

- Notice the blood all over the wall. Don’t fuck with Big Bear cops

- Yeah Bundy, free drinks on you

- Scott Vine 1st, Jed Anderson 2nd, Zack Hale 3rd

You would say that after the premiers the night before most of the snowboarders in San Diego have a rough Saturday morning. I had no intentions of heading to the ASR tradeshow this year and stuck with them. Luke, Jack, Danny, Amber, and I headed to the convention center to meet up with Keir Dillon. We got there just in time for them to close the doors and tell us that registration was closed and no more badges to get in where to be given out. So now what? Might as well head across the street and grab some drinks.

- Almost made it to the show, pretty pumped I didn’t

- FRENDS downtown in SD

- Keir is not afriad to have a camera pointed at him

Friday we made it to downtown San Diego for what I was really coming down here for. Heading out to some of the new flicks for some mind blowing riding, and of course the parties that come along with video premiers. Both the Forum and Standard movies were of course insane. My favorites of the night were Jake Blauvelt, and John Jackson in the Forever Forum video. As for the Black Winter there some of the sickest pow riding by Sammy Luebke, Mark Landvik, Eric Jackson, and the best surprise of the night was Lonnie Kauk had the closer. Hell yeah Lonnie.

- The venue for the night

- Danny Davis, Ben Gavelda, Liam Gallagher, Daniel Ek, and Jack Mitrani

- Kramer, John J, and Nic Drago

- Always a treat to see Tyson at the bar

- IAM owner John Makens and Sammy Luebke

- Another one bites the dust from Grenade. Kevin Casillo is now the new Spy Team Manager

- Sammy and Kramer looking like they are having a great time

With a few stops at Airports in Sacramento, then LAX. Then a stop in the middle of nowhere for the FRENDS to make a skit for Fuel that should turn out pretty hilarious. The final destination of our night was to end up at Kevin Pearce’s house in Carlsbad. Where we would meet up with Cole Barash, Eric Warner, Sam Spedale, and Cody Rosenthal. Who is recovery well after his brokeback injury at Superpark. You can still help out by checking this link out http://www.snowboard-revolution.com/news/Love-for-Cody-Rosenthal-_-Back-Fundraiser.html
