This has been quite the year for avalanches and the season is barley underway.  Maybe its the fact I have been more in tune the past few years but the fatality count and unusual inbound occurrences have been way above normal.  From deaths and inbound aveys in Wyoming, Whistler and a staggering 10 plus fatalities in Utah alone its been a rough start to say the least.

Checking the current conditions and advisories is a must every morning before you go out.  Even if your riding inbound its a good idea to know whats up and wear your beacon (if you have one) especially after new snow has fallen.  I read this the other day via Jeremy Jones blog:

“For the first time in my life I have had to treat terrain in bounds like the backcountry and found myself avoiding in bound lines because of slide danger. In ten years of checking avalanche forecasts I have never seen it rated as EXTREME.”

Its never been a better time to check out your local Avalanche clinics, get certified or be more knowledgeable to the risks where you shred.  Be safe and Know before you go!
