Spring time in Mammoth’s main park is in full swing right now. With many of the resorts around the country closed for the season, as always Mammoth is still going strong. There are still two halfpipes, plenty of jumps, and fun rails in the Unbound park. Right next to main is the Forest Trail park with some smaller jumps and fun mini jibs.
The photos you will see here are all in Main with a pretty big crew of us just cruising around with Andrew Miller, Scott Blum, Mac Spedale, Kyle Lopiccilo, Greg Bretz, Cornell Agee, Shayne Pospisil, Nick Russell, Cody Rosenthal, Lonnie Kauk, and SNOWREV owner Johnny Centi. There will be plenty more from Mammoth coming soon since this weekend is the West Coast Invitational, Superpark and also be on the looking for the Revolution after hours session that went down at the beginning of the week. Stayed tuned for it all… Mammoth is not done by a long shot yet with plenty of snow and the new spring park high up on the mountain coming very soon. Here is a quick update from Main Park:

After a long 9hr drive from Tahoe we got in to SLC around 330am went to bed for a few hours and headed off bright and early up Brighton to ride. If you have never been here you truly are blowing it. After a long weekend in Tahoe, and Big Bear before that. We were all itching to ride some Powder. This for me could be the most fun place I’ve ever been snowboarding. Brighton on a powder day has endless terrain to shred all day and pretty much always find good snow. The park is fun too. Today we just brought out the little digi-cam instead of some people having to lug aound heavy bags so we could ride all day long, and hike all over the place. Our crew was Andrew Miller, Mark Dangler, myself (Joe Carter), and some friends along for the ride. In this one you might not be seeing the most wild snowboarding, but just a bunch of friends cruising an amazing resort and the rest of our first day back in Utah. Enjoy.

Crew Chronicles | 2008 Vans Cup at Tahoe

After a long week of riding everyday hard in Big Bear let’s make an 8-hour trip up to North Lake Tahoe.  For this weekend we will be attending the 2008 Vans Cup held at Northstar. After a quick stop in Mammoth, Andrew Miller and I got there Friday night just in time to see the whole rail jam contest.  Then of course finding where the free beer was and we helped polish off the keg. This was the first night for me meeting Mark Dangler, the snowrev.com filmer and and long time photographer guru George Crossland. Two rad guys that make me pumped that I now get to work with, myself being a new member to the snowrev crew.  Our weekend for the most part started out pretty mellow. We stayed in a sick hotel right on the beach of Lake Tahoe so we could have an early morning for the stacked slopestyle contest. That night we went pretty big. The Snowboarder magazine party held at the Biltmore was like any other after party with plenty of dudes, not very many chicks, and plenty of booze. Trevor Andrew held it down for the music performance at the bar. After a while I ended up losing Andrew and Mark.  Luckily I had some friends that let me crash at their pad, thanks Garrity. So that night was pretty fun, giving me a solid hangover for Sundays halfpipe contest. Then a long drive back to Utah to ride some pow the next day. Check the photos and you’ll see how our little trip went.

SIA 2008 interview with Andrew Marriner, the team manager of Billabong Snow. Andrew manages the travels of riders like Kale Stephens, Scotty Lago, Shayne Pospisil, Kevin Jones, Jaime Anderson, Andrew Crawford and many more. That is a task in itself but Andrew has another position at Billabong. He is also the sales manager and oversees all of the regional Billabong snow reps. He is a busy guy but manages to do all that and stay on top of it. Check out his interview HERE.

Surfing in the Vask Country - The other day I was surfing in the Vask Country, the water was cold and clean and the waves were pretty huge and strong. We were just two people inside the water NO JOKE!
The Vask Country is situated in the northeast of Spain and it’s a region that has had many political problems for the last 35 years. Check out the pics and see the magnitude of the waves:

So you are thinking about riding in the back country? Thinking about hiking off the beaten trail, getting the freshies, exploring the out bounds of your local jib line. Before you do so, explore the sigma trianlge: SAFETY FIRST LAST AND ALWAYS.

Brighton | Utah | snowboard

Brighton Backcountry; There is some insane terrain just a short hike from the lifts. The main issue with these zones are that 1 they are “out of bounds” and 2 avalanches are very common; so you need to be aware and be prepared in case of an avalanche.

Brighton | Utah | snowboard

A common occurrence in the Utah backcountry. Three foot slab slide in the depths of the commonly known “safety zone” : The tree zones slide too. In this particular slide, one snowboarder was trapped under the snow (with oxygen) for an thirty mins before patrol could access him to dig him out. If his friend was unable to locate him and dig out his face this snowboarder would have been buried alive.

Johnny Centi | Brighton | Utah | snowboard

My piece of mind for you snowboarders is Test Your Equipment and learn how to use the expensive tools that are designed to save your life and the lives of your riding pals. John Centi searching with the Ortovox X1 which searches in both digital and analog.

Sam Spedale | Brighton | Utah | snowboard

Sam Spedale testing his peeps for the first time in the Utah backountry. Sam is using the Tracker DTS which only searches in digital. Be sure to practice with this beacon especially when using the multiple burial feature.

Very Much Success.

Johnny Centi Brighton | Utah | snowboard

When searching with your avalanche beacon avoid using any electronic devices that can potentially cause interference to the beacon. Cell phones, radios, mp3 players, headlamps and more can effect your transceiver. Shown here is the Ortovox X1 which is a $300 USD beacon.

Here the crew decides to use the needle in the haystack method by searching for the burial without an avalanche beacon, you can buy a probe like this one at Suburban Blend.

To learn more about avalanche probes check out Avalanche.org

Multiple cell phones, mp3 players and other electronic interference made it very difficult for the group to pinpoint the exact location of the burial. You will also want to avoid magnetic buttons when using the
